Privacy Policy
OpenPlanetData has no accounts, no advertising, and no third-party analytics or tracking pixels. This page lists everything the website and the download mirror record about you. It is short on purpose. How the data itself is licensed is covered in the Terms of Use.
What we record
Section titled “What we record”- Hosting. The website and the download mirror are served by Cloudflare, which processes request data (IP address, user agent, requested URL) to deliver and protect the service, under its own privacy policy.
- Dataset builds. The pipelines that build the datasets run on servers provided by Ipregistry. They process only public map data and upload the results; they never receive visitor data, and we do not send IP addresses to Ipregistry or anyone else for lookup or enrichment.
- Download logs. Requests to
download.openplanetdata.comare logged with the file requested, the time, the requesting IP address, and the user agent. We use these logs only to operate the service and to publish the aggregate figures on the Statistics page, which never identify anyone. - Page feedback. The “Was this page helpful?” widget records your vote and the page. If you write a comment it also records the comment, the reason you picked, and the email address you may optionally give so we can reply. To limit abuse we store the country Cloudflare derives from your connection and a salted hash of your IP address, never the address itself. Written comments are emailed to the maintainers; only aggregate counts are published.
Cookies and local storage
Section titled “Cookies and local storage”The site sets no cookies of its own. It keeps two things in your browser’s local storage: your light/dark theme choice and a marker that you have already voted on a page. Cloudflare may set strictly necessary security cookies of its own.
Third-party requests
Section titled “Third-party requests”Your browser fetches web fonts from Google Fonts on every page, base map tiles from CARTO on the Boundaries page, the world outline for the globe from jsDelivr on the Introduction page, and the Ipregistry logo and font on the homepage. Those providers see your IP address for those requests, under their own policies. Nothing is sent to social networks unless you click one of the share links.
Your data and how to reach us
Section titled “Your data and how to reach us”We do not sell or share what we record, and we do not use it for anything other than running the service and the statistics above. To ask about, correct, or delete anything you submitted, open an issue or use the feedback widget at the bottom of any page and leave your email so we can reply privately.
Changes
Section titled “Changes”We may update this page as the project evolves; the date at the bottom shows when it last changed.
