Terms of Use

OpenPlanetData is a free, volunteer-run initiative. This page says what you may do with the data and on what basis it is provided. It is short on purpose. What the website records about you is covered separately in the Privacy Policy.

Datasets based on OpenStreetMap data (© OpenStreetMap contributors) are made available under the Open Database License (ODbL).

Today that covers every dataset we publish: the boundaries, the OpenStreetMap snapshots, and the time zones, which are built from timezone-boundary-builder and therefore also derive from OpenStreetMap.

In practice, when you use, redistribute, or build on these datasets you must:

  • credit © OpenStreetMap contributors and make clear the data is available under the ODbL, for example by linking to openstreetmap.org/copyright;
  • if you publicly use an adapted version of the database, offer that adapted database under the ODbL as well (share-alike).

The OpenStreetMap copyright page and the OSMF attribution guidelines explain the requirements in full. Attribution to OpenPlanetData is appreciated but not required.

The website itself — its text, illustrations, and code — is © OpenPlanetData and contributors. Its source is public on GitHub; quoting the documentation with a link back is welcome.

  • The datasets and this website are provided as is, without warranty of any kind. The data comes from community-maintained sources and can contain errors, gaps, or disputed borders; check it before relying on it for anything critical.
  • We do our best to keep files available and fresh, but we do not guarantee availability, and we may change formats, paths, or discontinue a dataset. Where we can, we announce such changes on the site first.
  • There are no accounts, API keys, or rate limits. Please download considerately: use the file index and checksums to fetch only what changed rather than re-downloading multi-gigabyte files on a schedule.

We may update this page as the project evolves; the date at the bottom shows when it last changed. Questions go to the issue tracker.
